The J. Stanley Tunney Bridge was built in part to allow for greater flow of traffic into and out of the peninsula including Seaside Heights. This greater flow was needed particularly in the summer tourism months. The J Stanley Tunney Bridge was built immediately to north and next to the existing Thomas Mathis Bridge built in 1950.   The Tunney Bridge is higher than the Mathis Bridge to allow boats to travel underneath without requiring a draw bridge.
